Switching From Cool to Heat

You may have been told to turn the thermostat to the off position and wait a few minutes before switching from cool to heat, or heat to cool. Is this really important?

Yes, it’s generally recommended to wait about 5 minutes after switching your HVAC system from heating to cooling (or vice versa). This allows the system’s compressor to equalize pressure before restarting, which helps prevent potential damage.

Here’s why:

  • Compressor Protection: HVAC compressors need time to release built-up pressure before restarting. Turning the system back on too quickly can cause strain or even damage.
  • Preventing Short Cycling: Rapid switching can cause the system to short cycle, which reduces efficiency and increases wear and tear.
  • Thermostat Delay Feature: Many modern thermostats have a built-in delay (usually 3-5 minutes) to protect the system.

So, while it’s not an absolute rule, waiting 5 minutes before switching between heating and cooling is a good practice to prolong the life of your HVAC unit.
